“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” —James 4:6
As a newlywed, I desired to be a godly wife and do what God asked me to do, so I went to the Bible for guidance. However, when I came across Colossians 3:18 (nasb)—“Wives, be subject to your husband”—I thought, This has to be a typo.
Yet as I explored Scripture, I learned that submission is God’s idea. So, if God has this idea, it’s a good thing because His yoke is easy and His burden is light.
Submission doesn’t mean I’m inferior or I lose my identity. It doesn’t mean I’m a doormat, that my opinion isn’t necessary. Submission isn’t about the one who’s smarter or who’s a better leader. And it doesn’t mean I must blindly obey, submit to verbal or physical abuse, or follow my husband into sin.
Instead, biblical submission is a gift I can offer my husband. It means I give up my desire to control. And it means that by humbling myself, I can be a picture of grace to my husband on a daily basis. How beautiful is that?
