Practical Prayer

November 5, 2024 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

You who seek God, let your hearts revive. —Psalm 69:32 ESV

In 1857, some New York businessmen met on their lunch hour to pray, and soon the nation was experiencing revival, with prayer meetings spreading across the country. This emphasis on prayer had very practical results.

Historians describe the next sixty years as the evangelical social awakening where Protestant churches began to be involved in mercy ministry. Organizations like the Salvation Army began doing street ministry. There was a great outpouring of Americans into foreign missions. And once the Emancipation Proclamation was given, a lot of missionaries were involved in teaching freed slaves how to read.

There’s a lot of discussion right now about the best way to solve the problems of our nation. And while it’s important for us to vote for the leaders and issues that affect the future of our country, we need to remember that the greatest social changes will occur when people’s hearts are right with God.

So, pray for our leaders. Pray for our country. And pray and seek the Lord for the revival and spiritual awakening we so desperately need in our day.
