Praying in the Dark

December 5, 2024 Karen Ellis

I rise before dawn and cry out for help; I put my hope in your word. —Psalm 119:147

What has driven God’s poet to this darkened cave of the soul, full of uncertainty and the strange, fluttering noises of the heart? For some of us, our persecutors may be (as they are for the poet) literal enemies in pursuit. For others, they may appear as shadows and thoughts giving chase in our minds, the racing thoughts of endless “what ifs,” rounding corner after corner of doubt. . . .

Indeed, humanity has a long history of sleepless nights full of doubt, anxiety, and regret. Yet Christ’s finished work has restored our shards of peace, righting Satan’s cosmic injustice against God’s people. Our poet rising early to pray can put us in mind of our Savior pouring out his heart in the Garden of Gethsemane. . . . Jesus knows what it is to pray in the dark, and in prayer with his Father to find the strength to walk on, to know the peace that surpasses understanding in the midst of the storms of the day. 1
