Privilege and Pain

June 6, 2024 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

“A sword will pierce your own soul.” —Luke 2:35

Motherhood is indeed a privilege. But inherent within this privilege is also the potential for pain because anyone who accepts the call of motherhood risks having her heart broken as a result.

Mary of Nazareth experienced this pain more deeply than any mother who has ever lived. Yes, Mary was uniquely blessed to be the mother of the Son of God. But with the privilege would come excruciating pain—the painful price her Child would pay for the sin of the world.

You’re not Mary, of course. But no mother escapes the pain of motherhood entirely. Your children will disappoint you at times, just as you will disappoint yourself as a parent. Even on the best days, a mother’s job can be fraught with worry, fear, and guilt—which means moms must recognize their utter dependence on the grace of God, both for themselves and for their children. When mistakes and shortcomings rear their ugly heads, they can experience afresh the truth of the gospel that invites them to turn to Christ, receiving His mercy and forgiveness, and walking in renewed hope.

Make it Personal

Pray for the mothers you know to rely on God’s grace as they parent and that they would find hope in the challenges they face.
