Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you are also to forgive. —Colossians 3:13
Forgiveness is more than a way to find personal freedom, more than a way to ease the pain we feel in our hearts. It’s even more than a way to hold out the hope of reconciliation to those who have wronged us.
All those benefits are secondary to an even higher outcome. The ultimate goal of forgiveness is to bring glory and honor to God.
Forgiveness in the life of a believer showcases the astounding, redemptive heart of God. It puts on display the riches of His abundant mercy and amazing grace for all to see. Forgiveness isn’t so much about us as it is about Him. Every opportunity you encounter to practice forgiveness is an opportunity to draw attention to the God who so delights to show mercy and to pardon sinners that He gave His only Son to make it possible. When those around you see you forgiving, they may be seeing Christ in a way they’ve never known Him before. And they may be drawn to love, worship, and trust God.
