Realistic Expectations

For every one of God’s promises is “Yes” in him. —2 Corinthians 1:20

On June 23, 2013, Nik Wallenda set out to cross the Little Colorado River Gorge near the Grand Canyon on a tightrope. My husband and I watched from home as the camera revealed the daunting length of the wire. We didn’t think he could make it; we expected a terrible end.

You and I can have a similar posture toward God’s ability to finish what He has set out to do in this dark world. We look upon life with skeptical discouragement. How can God be up to something good when things look so bad?

I wonder how our distrust of God affects those around us. When we speak about the terrible state of the world, are we missing an opportunity to create hope in others?

What if we expected God to save the day like He said He would? What if we expected Him to help us no matter how dire the circumstances or powerful the temptations? What if we expected Him to be as powerful in the future as He has been in the past?
