If your instruction had not been my delight, I would have died in my affliction. I will never forget your precepts, for you have given me life through them. —Psalm 119:92–93
From verse 92 to the end, [Psalm 119] takes on a more personal perspective. The psalmist reflects on the efficacy of God’s word as evident in his personal circumstances. He’s in the midst of affliction. The wicked are plotting to destroy him. But because he has been meditating on the eternal and enduring word of God, he knows that his hardships are limited and temporary. They don’t endure. They have no authority over his life. God’s word does. So, he focuses not on his affliction but on the delightfully life-giving word of God. . . .
You know the satisfied feeling you get when something’s been on the tip of your tongue all day and you finally remember (usually around 3 a.m.)?! How much more satisfying is the remembrance of God’s word?! It doesn’t just satisfy. It revives. It gives life. It sustains.1
