Settled in Heaven

July 22, 2024 Kristie Anyabwile

Lord, your word is forever; it is firmly fixed in heaven. —Psalm 119:89

God’s word is the foundation of all that exists. The Lord set the earth on its foundations, so that it should never be moved (Psalm 104:5). Everyone and everything that has ever existed or will ever exist swings from the arm of the eternality of God’s word. God’s word cannot be reached, changed, or thwarted by any earthly power.

Yet God’s word is not isolated from his creation. The word has an inseparable bond with the world, because the world exists by that word. As we read in Genesis 1, God spoke the heavens and the earth into existence by his powerful, creative word. In his grace, God has bound together both his word and his world. God’s power, wisdom, and understanding come through his word (Isa. 54:10–11). God’s promises come through his word. His word is sure because he keeps his covenant. He is the only one who can promise with eternal certainty that his word is true.1
