“Surely they are my people, children who will not deal falsely.” —Isaiah 63:8
In Isaiah 63, God has shown great love and compassion to His children. And He asks, “Surely they won’t fail to respond to the love I have shown them. Right?”
Wrong. “They rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit” (v. 10).
God had saved them. And in His love, He redeemed them and “carried them all the days of old” (v. 9). He was attentive, kind, compassionate, and tender. But they rebelled— His own children! They afflicted the very One who had entered into their afflictions and borne them as His own.
As New Testament believers, this can happen to us, too. “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption” (Eph. 4:30). When we resist the Holy Spirit, we’re fighting against His work to make us more like Jesus.
Are you rebelling against God’s work in your life today, much like the children of Israel? Let Him have His way and do His mighty and powerful work in you.
