Take Your Prayer Life Out of the Box

Pray constantly. —1 Thessalonians 5:17

Several years ago, my prayer life was in a rut. The one steady part of my routine was that I filled my prayer journal. I felt as if I didn’t fill the page, I hadn’t prayed. Then a friend said, “It seems like you’re putting your prayer life in a box, and it’s stuck.”

I think a lot of prayer routines can be like this. They’re not bad, but as long as you keep your prayer life in these boxes, you’ll never have a prayer life.

Prayer is an ongoing conversation with God. He goes with you everywhere. So, why would you relegate your prayer life to one portion of the day? You don’t have to close your eyes, kneel, or even say “Dear God” and “Amen” for it to be prayer. Ultimately, prayer is communication, and it yields results.

In Acts 3:1–10, the beggar who had never been able to walk was healed. He began leaping and praising God. He knew of no rules by which to pray; it just flowed out of him.

When was the last time you did that?

Make it Personal

Is your prayer life stuck in any “boxes,” good as they may be? How can you instead develop a lifestyle of communicating with God?
