Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. —James 4:7
Do you ever feel as if you’re in a wave of temptation? That crazy ideas come to mind, and you struggle with giving in?
In Matthew 4, Jesus models a powerful way to respond to temptation. Satan tempted Jesus to fall down and worship him. Jesus responded, “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only” (v. 10). The moment Jesus showed His commitment to worship, the Bible says, “then the devil left him” (v. 11).
Praise defeats Satan. He hates praise because he hates God and anything that exalts or pleases God. One of Satan’s strategies is to get us to focus on ourselves—our needs, our problems, our circumstances, our feelings. When we lift our eyes up, though they may be filled with tears, and choose to praise the Lord, Satan’s plan is defeated and God is victorious in our lives.
Has Satan tormented you with fears and doubts? Do you find yourself being bombarded with temptation to sin? Try praising the Lord, and watch Satan flee.
