Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. —Psalm 100:4
First Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Give thanks in everything; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” The American Standard Version says, “This is the will of God . . . to you-ward.”
It’s God’s will “you-ward” that you give thanks in every circumstance. When you boil it down, thanksgiving is not so much for His benefit as it is for ours. It changes us. It helps us stay focused on God and His grace and goodness and the exceedingly abundant riches we have in Jesus. It helps us remain mindful of Him and to live our lives aright. And in the end, that’s what honors Him the most. A life of thankfulness reflects the glory of God.
So, let’s make a point to have an attitude of gratitude. Like David, let’s resolve:
I will thank the Lord with all my heart;
I will declare all your wondrous works.
I will rejoice and boast about you . . .
Most High.(Psalm 9:1–2)
