“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live.” —John 11:25
In John 11, we find death confronting a family in the village of Bethany. Lazarus had died, and four days later Jesus arrived. He said to Martha, Lazarus’ grieving sister, “Your brother will rise again” (v. 23).
Martha knew Jesus could raise her brother from the dead someday, but she needed faith for her present situation. Jesus told Martha not only what He would do but also who He is. Life is wrapped up in Jesus. There’s no physical life apart from God, and there’s no spiritual life apart from Jesus. The resurrection isn’t just an event—it’s a Person.
“Do you believe this?” Jesus said to Martha. Martha replied, “I believe you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who comes into the world” (v. 27). At that moment, faith overcame her confusion and despair.
Jesus went to Lazarus’ grave, where He demonstrated His power. He declared His authority over life and death, saying, “Lazarus, come out” (v. 43). And Lazarus came walking out of that tomb!
