“No one who comes to me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in me will ever be thirsty again.” —John 6:35
John 6:22–42 describes the morning after the feeding of the 5,000. Though the miracle was still fresh, the people wanted more from Jesus. “What can we do to perform the works of God?” they wondered (v. 28).
Our sin nature creates a pull toward anything that holds the promise of satisfaction. And while moving toward our cravings usually provides some temporary reward, they never satisfy for long. This is what Jesus was addressing in John 6:35. Jesus didn’t deliver an unlimited supply of loaves and fishes to the crowd. Instead, He offered Himself.
Our physical cravings are real. They require real food. But aren’t they also reminders that we tend to crave what can never fill us? And that Jesus makes it possible to be satiated in the hungriest parts of our souls?
He is the Bread of Life. He satisfies our cravings in a way nothing else ever can. Daily bread is a daily reminder that full vitality and contentment are found in Him.
