Encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin’s deception. —Hebrews 3:13
There are a whole range of ways we can provide biblical encouragement to someone, where we can come alongside them and infuse them with strength that we get from the Lord. It can include providing sympathy or comfort when needed. It can also mean giving exhortation.
There are times we give encouragement by helping someone reflect on the past—so they can see where they’ve come from and realize how they’ve grown. Sometimes we need to give a needed perspective on the present, pointing out an area that person needs to work on. Then there are times we need to cast a vision for the future, showing that by God’s grace and the power of the Holy Spirit, their lives can be different.
That’s why biblical encouragement is so robust. It says, “What does this person need to help them become more like Jesus?” May the Lord give us wisdom to provide that type of encouragement and the grace to be willing to receive it from others.
