“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” —John 6:35
In many cultures, bread is a staple of the diet. In Scripture, bread points to our basic spiritual needs. God provided in Christ the bread of life we need to sustain our spiritual life. The daily intake of this bread is what ensures we grow in spiritual strength and maturity.
A regular intake of God’s Word transforms our understanding and guides us through life toward His perfect will. If we didn’t commune with God through His Word, we would be relying on our own wisdom—and this can endanger our lives. The words Christ spoke to us are spirit and life (John 6:63).
God’s Word illuminates our darkness, guides us when we’re lost, encourages us when we’re down, nourishes us when we’re malnourished, sustains us when we need to be strengthened, comforts us when we’re sad, convicts us when we walk in disobedience, instructs us in His ways, and teaches us His will. As His children, how could we take even one step without having this daily fellowship?
