The Promise of Peace

August 14, 2024 Karen Ellis

I call with all my heart; answer me, Lord. I will obey your statutes. I call to you; save me, and I will keep your decrees. —Psalm 119:145–146

In the poet’s wee small hours, he draws closer to his own humanity, and so may we in ours. Not only do we desire God’s salvation from the terrors of the night, we also long to know that we have been heard (Psalm 3). . . .

We want the calm assurance—the peace—that’s promised when we present our petitions, our anxiety, our anger and fear to God. We want the promised exchange made manifest: our fear for his peace. We want to know “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, [that] will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:7 esv). We want to know that we are not alone in the dark. We want assurance that the Prince of Peace—the One who brings the renewal of faith and hope, whose light dispels the darkness of every room, heart, and mind—is truly Immanuel, God with us. 1

Make it Personal

Thank God that you are not alone in the dark and that the Prince of Peace is with you through every trial and difficulty.
