The Lord will protect you from all harm; he will protect your life. The Lord will protect your coming and going both now and forever. —Psalm 121:7–8
The word hope is commonly misunderstood, especially when we face difficulties. It’s during these trials that it’s hard not to despair. We forget to fix our eyes upon the place where true hope can be found.
When I want to throw in the towel, I need Psalm 121 to come to mind. Then I speak to my soul and tell it that my relief comes only from God, that He is controlling the situation, and that in His sovereignty He willed it. These words give me hope and encouragement to keep going.
What’s interesting is that in the Psalmist’s suffering, he focuses on God while encouraging his soul to wait on Yahweh. That should be our way of living, too! We cannot succumb to situations; rather we must speak God’s Word to our souls and fill our minds and hearts with it. Only then will we be able to rightly face the situations and trials that come into our lives.
