The True King

June 3, 2024 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

In the third year of the reign of King Jehoiakim of Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came to Jerusalem and laid siege to it. —Daniel 1:1

The “kings” that are exerting their power over you and me today don’t exactly resemble King Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel’s day. But no doubt there are people and circumstances attempting to control our lives. That’s why we must learn to counsel our hearts and minds according to the truth of God’s Word: that He is the true, eternal King.

That means cancer is not King. No pandemic is King. No demented dictator is King. Financial concerns and crises are not King. Injustices committed against us or against those we love are not King.

Other people may have the ability to wound us deeply or even cause our hearts to break. But none of these people is King either.

Only God is King. All others are held in check by Him, rising and falling at His command. And this truth (because it is truth) infuses us with spiritual vigor and imparts a sense of equilibrium which we’d have no hope of enjoying otherwise.

Take time to praise and thank God that He is King over everything in your life—and in our world.
