The Ultimate Goal of Forgiveness

June 28, 2024 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. —1 Timothy 1:17

Forgiveness is more than a way to find personal freedom, more than a way to ease our pain. It’s even more than a way to hold out the hope of reconciliation to those who have wronged us.

In a sense all those benefits are secondary to an even higher outcome. The ultimate goal of forgiveness is to bring glory and honor to God.

Forgiveness in the life of a believer showcases the astounding, redemptive heart of God. It puts on display the riches of His abundant mercy and His amazing grace.

Forgiveness isn’t so much about us as it is about Him. Every opportunity you encounter to practice forgiveness is an opportunity to draw attention to the God who so delights to show mercy and to pardon sinners that He gave His only Son to make it possible. When those around you see you forgiving, when they hear your stories, when they watch for your reactions, they may be seeing Christ in a way they’ve never known Him before.
