The Writing on Our Wall

December 14, 2024 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

You will keep the mind that is dependent on you in perfect peace, for it is trusting in you. —Isaiah 26:3

Robert and I recently received a text from a friend in her nineties who has had troubles piling up one on top of another. The battle wearing on her had left her struggling with fatigue and discouragement.

But “I am finally feeling better,” she wrote. “I think anxiety was sapping my strength. It’s one thing to say things are in God’s hands and another thing to think you have to help Him carry them.”

Oh, this pull we feel toward thinking we can manage our own lives and shoulder our own burdens. How deceptively cruel is this tactic of our enemy.

No matter our age, pride can pilfer our peace and sabotage our trust in heaven’s Ruler. We may not be proud along the order of Belshazzar in Daniel 5, but pride can lure us away from the truth by other means as well. May the writing on our wall be inscribed in the indelible ink of “Heaven rules,” with none of our own ruling demands scribbled over it.

Make it Personal

Pray that you let go of your pride and anxiety and surrender control of all areas of life to God.
