We Belong to Him

November 20, 2024 Kristie Anyabwile

I am yours; save me, for I have studied your precepts. —Psalm 119:94

God’s word implanted in our heart does not return void. It stays with us, sometimes latently, and God uses that word to give us life. . . .The psalmist prays for God to save him . . . and then gives the evidence that he belongs to God: namely, that he has sought God’s precepts . . .

The psalmist could have considered his plight in light of his enemies. Instead, he considered his enemies in light of his Lord. Nothing could give him such a confidence in asking except assurance in knowing he belongs to God, and that God hears and answers. It is precisely because Christians belong to God that we know God will hear and answer our cries. . . . This assurance gives us courage to keep climbing on, reaching landings, turning corners.

We all have enemies—the world, the flesh, and the devil. . . . Our enemy prowls around like a lion searching for someone to devour—and we must resist him, being firm in our faith (1 Pet. 5:8–9) by meditating on the Lord’s faithful word.1
