“I will be exalted in the earth!” —Psalm 46:10 ESV
The beginning of Psalm 46 includes the inscription, “To the choirmaster.” This psalm was intended to be sung, even though those singing it were in the midst of upheaval and deep troubles. The point is that when we’re in trouble, we need to sing! As one writer said, “Let us sing even when we do not feel like it, for in this way we give wings to heavy feet and turn weariness into strength.”1
Sing while you’re in the storm. Show you have faith that God’s promises are true. Then sing after He has stilled the waves and the storm. Let your troubles become an occasion for composing a new song that will minister grace to others.
The grandest, most powerful songs can flow out of the most difficult seasons and circumstances of our lives. When we’ve been tossed and turned by waves that threaten to overwhelm us and have found God to be all we need, we will be able to sing with even greater conviction, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (v. 1 ESV).
