Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts. —1 Corinthians 14:1
Some time ago I read through 1 Corinthians and made a list of the expressions of genuine love. The apostle Paul says that we’re to walk in the way of love. But what does that look like?
Paul says that if we really love each other, we will respect each other as well as each other’s gifts and strengths. We will work together toward a common goal instead of working against each other. We will think of each other as family. And we will nurture other believers spiritually.
The way of love is the way of humility, esteeming others as better than ourselves, lifting them up rather than lifting ourselves up.
We are instructed from the Word of God to pursue love (1 Cor. 14:1), put on love (Col. 3:14), increase and abound in love (1 Thess. 3:12; Phil. 1:9), and be fervent in love (1 Pet. 4:8). When our lives look like the description above, we can demonstrate God’s love to our needy world in practical and personal ways.
