The Lord was with Joseph. —Genesis 39:2
As the favored son of eleven brothers, Joseph had been singled out by his father, Jacob, and lavished with affection and gifts. However, that favor incurred the jealousy of his brothers, who threw him in a pit and then sold him to passing merchants.
How could Joseph have seen that these tragic events were not random acts but carefully scripted scenes in a great, eternal drama of redemption? Of course, he could not. From his finite point of view, all Joseph could have known was what he faced in the moment.
Yet we know something important about Joseph’s situation—something he could only have grasped by faith. We know “the LORD was with Joseph” (Gen. 39:2). That reality made all the difference in the world and in the outcome of Joseph’s story.
