An angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them. —Luke 2:9
We know that angels are mighty creatures and heavenly beings (Psalm 103:20–21), which explains why their appearance on earth would emanate “the glory of the Lord.” But more than anything, their primary job is to serve God and bring Him pleasure.
So, they came where they were told when Jesus was born. For they had known the Son of God since they were first created. They knew His intimate relationship with the Father. And yet Jesus chose to come down to this messed-up, prodigal planet.
Why? “I delight to do your will, my God” (Psalm 40:8). These heavenly angels knew the Son had been sent here and He had come at His Father’s pleasure. When they were sent, they did the same thing.
But it’s what all of us are called to do and should delight to do. When you hear the angels’ song, don’t hear only the rhythmic words. See them doing the Father’s pleasure, as Jesus did and as you and I are to do as well.
