That God’s word will not be slandered. —Titus 2:5
Throughout his short letter to Titus, Paul gives instructions to believers in various seasons and stations in life. He shows what it looks like when all believers live in a way that’s “consistent with sound teaching” (2:1).
But Paul didn’t just toss around these concepts as being good ideas, nor did he intend that they were solely for our personal spiritual growth or even for the benefit of other believers. In Titus 2, he lays out the purpose that gives us an even grander, greater motivation for taking this message seriously: “that God’s word will not be slandered” (v. 5).
Paul’s point is simple and sobering. When we call ourselves Christians and claim to believe God’s Word but don’t live according to it, the Scriptures will be dishonored in the eyes of those watching us. Any disconnect between what His Word says and the way we live will give them ammunition to speak evil of God and His ways.
Instead, the example of our lives should earn the respect of onlookers, making God’s Word more attractive and compelling.
