One with many friends may be harmed, but there is a friend who stays closer than a brother. —Proverbs 18:24
It is a true blessing to have trustworthy friends with whom we can share our deepest thoughts. The woman or man who has such wise and compassionate friends is stronger than the one who tries to go at life alone.
There is a risk, however: With such high-quality friends, we may be prone to seek their counsel before seeking God’s. In fact, we may even find ourselves having received their counsel, acted on it, and moved forward without ever bringing the matter to God at all. God was next in line, and there He stayed.
Friends will hopefully point us to our Father if we’ve sought them before we sought Him. They will remind us that there is never a time when God should be next. Christ is the “Wonderful Counselor,” not the Wonderful Corroborator; the source, not the backup. When life gets turbulent, remember there is a friend who stays closer than a brother.
