We do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with inexpressible groanings. —Romans 8:26
In the times of my Christian life when I’ve lost the desire to pray, I’ve felt disgusted by my own apathy and lack of interest in what I love most. There’s nothing in the universe that I treasure more than my Savior, yet I recognize that my heart can grow numb and dull. It’s so easy for that full heart that burns with passion for Christ to lose amazement at His beauty and entertain itself with banalities that leave it empty.
My discouragement about prayer is often the result of allowing my desires to govern my decisions. I have a heart that’s deceitful by nature and I cannot trust that its desires are aligned with the truth. No Christian likes to admit that she doesn’t desire God. The truth that I have found is that my apathy toward prayer manifests in a lack of desire for Him.
I need to constantly inform my desires with the truth of God’s Word and submit them to it.
