Working Hours and Ministry Years

And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. —Colossians 3:17

Jesus was a carpenter. By putting in hour after hour of blue-collar labor, He shared the routine of our lives. He worked, sweated, got tired, slept hard, and got up each morning to do it over again.

Jesus came to earth to love us in person— not as a stand-off observer but as a hands-on participant. He lived like us. And that meant work—daily, humble, productive work. As far as His earthly time is concerned, Jesus served more years making chairs than He did making disciples.

It comes as no surprise that when Jesus chose men and women to carry on His mission, He looked mostly for ordinary people at work in ordinary ways. Though He called some to leave their nets and fishing boats behind, many whose lives He transformed returned to their ordinary jobs . . . serving a new Master.

Make it Personal

What would it look like for you to do your current job “in the name of the Lord Jesus”? Would anything need to change?
