“I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” —Revelation 3:20
The question often asked about the above verse is whether Christ was speaking to backslidden believers or to the unsaved. I think the answer is both. Any person in either of these conditions has pushed Christ to the outside.
And yet where do we find Him? He is knocking. Approaching. Pursuing. Seeking to reprove and discipline, yes. Calling us to repentance, yes. But all because He loves us and desires fellowship with us (v. 19). He draws near that we might reciprocate His love, experiencing new life and intimacy with Him.
If He didn’t pursue us, we would never pursue Him. Man’s fallen condition is such that we would rather starve on our own empty calories than dine on the Bread of Life. And die we would—if not for a God who comes to our doorstep and humbles Himself to knock for admittance from those of us who should be on our knees begging Him to enter in.
