Mary Kassian: How many of you have messed something up because you thought you knew what you were doing but were too stubborn to read or follow the directions?

A year-and-a-half ago I decided I was going to sew a dress for my son’s wedding. I got an “A” when I sewed an apron in Home Economics class in high school. My mother is a European-trained seamstress. My second cousin is a leading international fashion designer. I have the right pedigree. All you have to do is cut out the pieces, pin them together, line them up at that little 5/8ths-inch line and let her rip. How hard can it be?
