A Searching Heart

Topics: Prayer

Nancy Leigh DeMoss: I’ll never forget years ago sitting at the memorial service for my twenty-two-year-old brother who’d been killed in a car accident. We wondered why God would take the life of this young man who was passionate about Christ and preparing for ministry.

A pastor at that service addressed these questions, saying, “It’s not wrong to ask ‘why’ as long as you ask, not with a clenched fist, but with a searching heart.”

I think about that when reading the serious questions the prophet Habakkuk put before the Lord. He said, “God, you will not hear? Why do you idly look at wrong?”

Scholars debate Habakkuk’s mindset, and ultimately no one knows if he had a clenched fist or a searching heart. No one really knows your heart, either. Except God. As you take your questions before Him, make sure your fists are unclenched and that your heart is searching, not just for answers, but for God Himself.

With Seeking Him, I’m Nancy Leigh DeMoss.
