Beautiful Sound
Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth: Have you ever heard an orchestra when it's tuning up before a concert?
(Orchestra tuning)
Nancy: What a racket! When the instruments play together, it’s a beautiful sound. But when they’re all playing their own thing, it’s horrendous.
That’s a lot like church. When we all do our own thing out of selfish hearts, it’s ugly. But if we all listen to one another and do what’s good for the whole group, it can be really beautiful.
The apostle Paul spends most of 1 Corinthians telling those believers how to get along with each other. Then he says, “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal” (13:1).
It doesn’t matter how spiritual our words may sound. If we’re not saying them with love, we’re just adding to the noise and confusion of our culture.
What kind of music are you making?
