False Appearances
Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth: I once had an unforgettable conversation with a young mother of seven who was thinking about leaving her husband for a man she had met on the Internet. As we met together, she admitted that it was wrong. But she said, “He’s so good to me and my children.”
I tried to help her see that if this man really cared for her, he wouldn’t be breaking up her marriage. This mother was being deceived.
The first temptation also involved deceptive appearances. God had told Adam and Eve not to eat from a certain tree. But the fruit appeared to be delicious. Satan lied about the consequences of eating it. “You will not surely die . . . when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God” (Gen. 3:4–5).
If only Eve had trusted God’s Word, she could have seen through the appearances.
Today you may encounter some deceptive appearances. If you trust God’s Word, you’ll be able to see through the deception, and you’ll save yourself and others a lot of heartache.
