Happy Beggars
Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth: What makes you truly happy?
Woman 1: A month where we can pay all the bills.
Woman 2: Chocolate!
Woman 1: All the bills!
Woman 2: Give me some chocolate!
Nancy: The first sermon that Jesus preached was on how to experience true joy. How to be happy, or blessed. This is how He began:
Woman 3: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
Nancy: Now we don’t usually think of poverty as a blessing, but Jesus was introducing a radically different kind of thinking.
When you look at the Bible’s original Greek language, you see that when Jesus said poor, He was talking about someone who was utterly destitute. Jesus was really saying, "Blessed are the spiritual beggars"—those who know they’re spiritually destitute and bankrupt.
Do you want to be blessed? Admit your desperate need to God. Come as a beggar, and He’ll pour out on you the riches of His kingdom.
With Seeking Him, I’m Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth.
