Holiness and Happiness
Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth: What comes to mind when I say “holiness”?
Woman 1: I would say a person who is holy is someone who does good things and who helps people.
Woman 2: Umm, sour-faced.
Woman 3: Someone who’s holy? Someone who’s always uptight.
Nancy: Did you know that according to the Bible holiness and happiness go together?
In Psalm 4, David says that the ungodly love vain words and seek after lies. In contrast, those who are godly, or holy, experience true happiness. David prayed, “You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound” (v. 7).
If we want to increase in peace and joy, we need to be willing to let God make us holy.
As the great 18-century preacher Jonathan Edwards said,
Jonathan Edwards: Holiness is a most beautiful and lovely thing. There is nothing in it but what is sweet and ravishingly lovely.
With Seeking Him, I’m Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth.
