Hymn Story—There Is a Fountain
Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth: Eighteenth-century author and poet William Cowper had deep emotional and mental health issues. He struggled with depression, and he attempted suicide more than once.
Yet he left us this beautiful hymn:
There is a fountain filled with blood
Drawn from Emmanuel’s veins,
And sinners plunged beneath that flood
Lose all their guilty stains.
What an amazing statement of faith! Cowper counseled his own heart with what he knew to be true from God’s Word—even though at times he struggled, emotionally, to believe it.
Tomorrow, we remember that day when that cleansing fountain first flowed at Calvary. Cowper understood that Jesus shed His precious blood to deliver us from all sin, and He’ll keep delivering us “'til all the ransomed church of God” is finally “saved to sin no more!”
