Hymn Story—Amazing Grace

Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth: His life had been hard. Born in 1725, his mother died of tuberculosis just before he turned seven. He was sent to boarding school for two years, then went off to sea at age eleven. He was mistreated by others and lived an immoral life; ultimately, he became the captain of a slave-trading ship.

John Newton knew how horrible sin could be. Maybe that’s why he later referred to himself with words like “great sinner” and “wretch.”

That saved a wretch like me . . .

Nancy: But God delivered John from what he called his “wild career,” and we now know him as the author of the hymn "Amazing Grace."

What’s your story? As Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday approach, why not do what John Newton did? Take a moment today to reflect on God’s amazing grace in your life, and thank Him for saving you!
