Mary Was an Available Woman

Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth: Silent night, holy night. All is calm; all is bright. We have such a peaceful picture of that first Christmas. Mary laid her baby in the straw while the shepherds oohed and aahed.

But if you’ve given birth, you know that it couldn’t have been that easy. From the moment the angel told Mary she would deliver a baby, she knew she was in for hardship.

  • She was willing to lose her reputation as a virgin.
  • She faced possible stoning, as permitted by Mosaic Law.
  • She was willing to go through nine months of discomfort and sleeplessness.
  • She was willing to undergo labor pains.

Even though all that lay ahead of her, she told the angel, “I am the Lord’s servant. . . . May it be to me as you have said” (Luke 1:38).

We’re all called to say the same thing. “Lord, do you want me to be married? To stay single? To have kids? To live in a cramped house?” Whatever it is, respond like Mary: “I am the Lord’s servant.”

With Seeking Him, I'm Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth.
