Strength for the Battle
Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth: When Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, He went through a great battle. Would He obey His Father and bear the weight of sin on the cross? As He prayed in anguish, the Scripture tells us that, “An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him” (Luke 22:43).
The word there in the original language means "to make strong inwardly." Jesus received inward spiritual strength, but He had to continue the struggle.
God didn’t deliver Jesus from the battle, but He did give Jesus strength to persevere in the battle. He sometimes does the same thing for us. If you have three toddlers and are resisting the temptation to be angry and impatient, you don’t need deliverance from the battle. You need to be strengthened inwardly to face the battle.
Here’s one way we can pray. “Lord, I’m weak and needy. Come and strengthen me in this moment of weakness so I won’t fail you.”
