Two Prayers
Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth: Jesus once told a story about two men who offered very different prayers. The first was mostly interested in himself.
Man 1: “God, I thank you that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector.”
Nancy: His pride made him blind to the depravity of his own heart. The other man—a despised tax collector—simply cried out in humility.
Man 2: “God, please be merciful to me, a sinner.”
Nancy: This man didn’t attempt to justify himself. Instead, he admitted that his only hope was God’s mercy.
Jesus concluded the story by saying, “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Luke 14:11). Do you want to truly connect to God when you pray? Then remember that God draws near to those who have a humble, broken spirit.
